The Hicks Library is on a partially flexible schedule. Students in grades Kindergarten and 1st grade will come to the library every 5 days as part of the Specials rotation. Students in 2nd - 5th grades come to the library based on the needs of the current class - that may be once a week as a class or in stations.
When Specials classes are not in the library, any student may come and check out books, do research, read, etc.
1. How many books can each student check out?
The checkout period is for 2 weeks, but of course students can bring their books back before the 2 weeks are up if finished. Students who find they need longer than 2 weeks with a book may renew them with Mrs. Grommesh or Ms. Betty. Books not turned in on time are overdue and students must return overdue books before checking out any other materials.
3. What happens if a book becomes lost or damaged?
While there are no fines for overdue books, if a book is lost or damaged it must be paid for. We will use this payment to purchase another copy of the book for students to enjoy. Please pay with exact cash or with a check made out to Tom Hicks Elementary School (THES), and send the payment to school in an envelope marked "Library." The payment is refundable if a lost book is found and returned during the current school year.
Students who owe money to the library for lost or damaged books risk losing the privilege of borrowing more materials and will receive a notice in their report card envelope.
4. Does the library accept book donations?
Yes, we accept new or gently used books. All donations are subject to the conditions of our district collection development policy. Any books that do not fit this policy for the library will be passed on to teachers for their classroom libraries. If you would like to see what our current needs are, please refer to our Amazon Wish List.
You can also donate books to our library in your child's name for our Birthday Book Club.
5. Do you need or want volunteers?
YES! We always appreciate anyone willing to spend a little time in the library helping with shelving or even reading a book to children as a Mystery Reader. Please feel free to volunteer through this PTA Volunteer Sign Up.
